July 28, 2024 - With the assistance of Greg Stokes, who volunteered his time, truck, and trailer, and logistical setup from Eric Nonamaker, Colorado Triumph Riders successfully picked up the donation of a 2007 Triumph Tiger 1050 in Denver, Colorado, and delivered it to the Union Jack Moto Rentals Ltd garage. The donor provided us with a list of recently serviced parts and an estimate of the age of other items. We promptly began by removing the fairings, giving the bike a thorough inspection, and taking it for a short test ride down the street. This marks the beginning of an exciting restoration project and a fantastic opportunity for the group, giving our membership the chance to win this great machine!
July 29, 2024 - The restoration journey of our 2007 Triumph Tiger 1050 began with a comprehensive walk-around of the motorcycle, giving us a first impression of the task at hand. We decided to start by removing all the fairings to get a clear view of the bike's inner workings. During this process, we discovered an Allen screw missing from the back right-hand side of the bottom fairing. Additionally, a grommet was absent from the left side tank fairing.
While inspecting the engine, we noticed some oil on the left side and the front of the cylinder head. The oil appeared old and didn't seem to be originating from any seals, hoses, or lines. It seemed like residual oil left from a previous service or maintenance. Our plan is to degrease the area thoroughly and monitor it to see if the issue replicates.
Our spirits remain high as we work to restore this Tiger 1050 to its former glory. With each step, we get closer to turning this project into a fantastic machine that one lucky member will have the chance to win. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to breathe new life into this adventure-ready motorcycle!
August 1, 2024 - Union Jack Moto Rentals Ltd made a purchase from Colorado Springs Powersports, securing essential items for our 2007 Triumph Tiger 1050 restoration project. The haul included a Triumph oil filter and crush washer, Triumph's Fuchs Lubricants 10w50 full synthetic engine oil, and three Triumph CR8EK spark plugs. An air filter was also purchased but is currently on back order. These items were generously donated to the Colorado Triumph Riders to aid in our restoration efforts.
With these vital components in hand, we are one step closer to bringing the Tiger 1050 back to top performance. Every donation and effort counts as we transform this bike into a prize-worthy machine for one lucky member. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this exciting restoration journey!
August 3, 2024 - Union Jack Moto recently visited Colorado Springs Powersports and ordered several key items for our 2007 Triumph Tiger 1050 restoration. They secured a left rear indicator, a horn, and a left side cockpit infill. These items will be generously donated to the Colorado Triumph Riders.
With these new components, we're making great progress on the Tiger 1050 project. Every part brings us closer to having the bike in excellent condition, ready for one lucky member to ride. Stay tuned for more updates as we keep advancing in this exciting restoration!
August 4, 2024 - We identified a few issues with the paint and fairings: the left white tank fairing is missing the Tiger logo and has cracked paint around the Alan screw holes, and the nose fairing has bubbles in the clear finish above the left headlight. Additionally, the left fairing is a slightly off-white compared to the rest of the bike. We're looking into repair estimates for these items. While these paint issues are not top priority, they are on our list. If you have any ideas or connections for getting these repairs done, we'd love to hear from you!
August 5, 2024 - We tested both the front and rear brake fluids and found the front at 3.3% and the rear at 3.5%, which is higher than ideal for DOT4. We’ll be flushing both systems and inspecting the components. Based on polls we conducted on our social media, the top contenders for tire replacements are the Michelin Road 6 (GT) and Metzeler Roadtec01 (SE). We’ll see what’s available when we swap out the old rubber. Additionally, we’re considering an R&G Racing radiator/oil cooler guard and will be swapping out the current hand grips for Oxford Heaterz EVO Touring heated grips to enhance comfort on those cooler rides.
August 6, 2024 - We’ve begun diving into the brake system and found that the front discs are in excellent condition, well within the tolerance limits at 4.6mm on the right and 4.4mm on the left, while the rear disc measures 5.9mm against a 5.0mm limit. Greg Stokes has taken possession of the bike and relocated the Tiger 1050 to his garage. He’ll be removing the aftermarket electrical components from a previous owner’s accessories no longer installed, adding the heated grips once purchased, positioning a USB charging port to the cockpit, and replacing the broken tail section that houses the tail lights and license plate bracket. We're excited to share that State Farm Agent Peter Martinez has kindly agreed to insure the bike until the giveaway.
August 8, 2024 - We've cleaned up some old wiring from a previous owner's ago removed accessories and found the source of a battery drain-a wire pinched between the battery box and frame. Out with the old! The only new additions: Oxford heated grips and some USB ports on a new cockpit infill.
Going to keep it simple, clean, and get this beauty back ready for you and the road.
August 9, 2024 - Our man, Greg has got the electrical and tail all sorted out. A little visual ASMR before and after shots up there above.
August 19, 2024 - Replacement parts have been coming in and being swapped. Blue Sea dual USB charger added to the cockpit infill to bring the Tiger in to the age of smart devices. Oxford heated grips and a new front brake lever switch are on the way. Much more to come!
September 30, 2024 - Union Jack Moto had some unforeseen events over the summer with motorcycle rentals that pulled us all away for a bit. We’re back on track and making progress on the Tiger 1050.
The bike has been deep cleaned and the rear end all tidied up. A new Michelin Road 6 GT is installed. This was the tire of choice by all of you who added your input.
We’ll start reassembling the back end, have new brake pads to install and will flush the old DOT4 out of the system. From there it is on to the front end for more of them same.
