March 2025 Ride Report
We will start to have much warmer stretches of weather rather than the cold. For those not riding on a regular basis, hopefully, they've been tinkering on their machines over the winter. Now is the time to check your bikes regardless. Ensure the controls are adjusted and operating properly. Lights are all functioning. The undercarriage is free of fluid leaks. Tire tread is looking good and the pressure is spot on. Tension on the chain is adjusted. While our weather is ever-changing, make sure you are staying hydrated, use sunscreen as needed, and on those cold days, dress in layers to avoid hypothermia and frostbite.
Check out your riding gear too!
Vehicle drivers will still be adjusting to seeing a larger number of motorcycles on the road. Ride like you are invisible and no one can see you. At the same time, ride like they can all see you, and they all want to take you out. Keep your scan vigilant while stopped at intersections. Always be scanning forward, to the sides, and checking those rearview mirrors. Leave yourself an out. It's a great technique to leave a good gap in front of you and the vehicle you are stopped behind. Don't stop directly behind a vehicle. Be offset to the sides so you can filter between them if needed. Once you get an established amount of vehicles behind you, then you can at least relax enough to go to neutral.
Also, when you see any vehicle approaching from the rear while you are stopped, it is great to flash your brake light. Quick squeezes of the front brake lever, followed by long squeezes. Vary the flashing of the light to grab the vehicle's attention. Motorcycles have a narrow profile from the rear. To the eye not looking for them, they blend into the rear of the vehicle you are behind.
Lane filtering is legal in Colorado. These are techniques if you don't filter or can't. Filtering in Colorado requires that vehicles must be stopped. Motorcycles can go no faster than 15 mph. It cannot be done on the far right-hand side.
